How this Japanese-Filipino got Japanese citizenship

DAVAO CITY - Koichi Sakae was a 14-year-old boy living on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao in December 1941 when the Pacific phase of World War II began with Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, followed just hours later by its attacks on U.S. bases in the Philippines.
